However, there\u2019s a lot to do in Cotopaxi National Park and, depending on your activities, your trip there might merit an overnight, or even multi-night, visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re wondering where to sleep at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/cotopaxi-national-park-facts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cotopaxi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we\u2019ll discuss some of your options in the following blog. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18547\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/featured-coto.jpg\" alt=\"Where to sleep at Cotopaxi?\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is possible to camp at Cotopaxi?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though it\u2019s not advertised very much,<\/span><b> YES, it is possible to camp at Cotopaxi.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From personal experience, if you\u2019re doing a longer trek like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/cotopaxi-day-trips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ruta del Condor or the Vuelta de Cotopaxi (loop around Cotopaxi Volcano)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, you can pretty much camp anywhere you like as long as you\u2019re off the beaten path (note: park authorities might not agree with this!).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re planning to camp closer to a park entrance, for instance, between the \u201cControl Norte\u201d Entrance, Tambopaxi Lodge, Limpiopungo Lagoon, and the Refuge, park authorities will expect you to camp in established campgrounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Camping in Cotopaxi is not officially free; the cost is $3 for locals and $5 for foreigners, although you may not get charged if no one approaches you (this isn\u2019t charged at the entrance, either).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Campgrounds within the park are listed below. Some are also indicated on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tambopaxi.com\/images\/Tambopaximapa.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">this map<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (look for the tent icon):<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">About half a kilometer before the Plains of Limpiopungo coming from the Mariscal Sucre Station you\u2019ll find a campsite that also offers two bathrooms.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A second campground is at the crossroads to Laguna Limpiopungo.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A third camping area is at Laguna de Santo Domingo, northeast of Cotopaxi volcano.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Apart from the established campsites within the park, you can camp at the following lodges and hotels: Tambopaxi Lodge, Hacienda El Porvenir, and Cuello de Luna Hotel. More on these in the next section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re planning on camping, make sure you have all the adequate gear! It gets cold out here and you\u2019ll likely be at an elevation of around 3,000 &#8211; 4,000 meters above sea level (9,800 feet &#8211; 13,000 feet). Make sure you have:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Winter sleeping bag<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thermal mat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rainproof tent\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cooking gear<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Food supplies and snacks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Warm layers\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fleece sweater or down jacket<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Waterproof jacket<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gloves<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>Fires are only permitted at campsites and never when wild camping. Only use a camp stove, in that case.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18549\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/caballos.jpg\" alt=\"Places to stay nearby Cotopaxi\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Places to stay nearby Cotopaxi<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you prefer not to rough it during your trip, other places to sleep in Cotopaxi include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.secretgardenquito.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Secret Garden Cotopaxi &#8211;<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Secret Garden is one of my favorite eco-friendly hostels in all of Ecuador. Their prices are all-inclusive and include meals as well as a hike up a nearby peak, Pasochoa. You can sleep in the dorms (shared cabins), equipped with wood-fired stoves, the hobbit houses or bird houses, almost all with magnificent views of Cotopaxi. When you go to the Secret Garden, you\u2019re basically all set. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can organize nearly all Cotopaxi-related activities from here.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tambopaxi.com\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tambopaxi Lodge<\/b><\/a><b> &#8211; <\/b>You\u2019ll likely see Tambopaxi Lodge at some point as you explore Cotopaxi National Park. It\u2019s an unmistakable red, adobe looking building with thatched roof. It\u2019s located near the \u201cControl Norte\u201d entrance of the park and is a great place to stop for coffee and lunch, if not for the night. If you\u2019re on a tight budget, you can camp here or stay in the dorms, though they also have more comfortable options (for a price!). The lodge organizes regular activities, including hour-long to <b><i>day-long<\/i><\/b> horseback rides across the <i>p\u00e1ramo<\/i>, or Andean grasslands surrounding the volcano.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.incahacienda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Hacienda San Agust\u00edn de Callo &#8211; <\/b><\/a>This is definitely not for those of you on a budget! But if you\u2019re willing to splurge, you won\u2019t regret spending a night (or two) here. This hacienda was built on actual Incan ruins and the owners have preserved the original structure, while making renovations to provide visitors with a luxurious experience. It serves one of the best <i>locro de papas<\/i> (Ecuadorian potato soup), but if you\u2019re not spending the night, expect to pay an additional $15 apart from your meal to explore the premises on a private tour with one of the staff members.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Hotel_Review-g488181-d1197892-Reviews-Hacienda_El_Porvenir_Tierra_del_Volcan-Cotopaxi_Province.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Hacienda El Porvenir &#8211;<\/b> <\/a>This is a mid-range option, similar to Tambopaxi but located on another flank of the Volcano, closer to Volcano Rumi\u00f1ahui. Here you\u2019ll find all the comforts of a hotel or, if you prefer, you can also camp on their premises. Activities can also be organized from Hacienda El Porvenir.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuellodeluna.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Hotel Cuello de Luna &#8211;<\/b><\/a> This hotel isn\u2019t inside the park itself and is located west of the main entrance. The location is more convenient if you want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/product\/jacamar-pass-quito-to-banos\/\">combine Cotopaxi with Quilotoa<\/a> since it\u2019s located roughly halfway between both destinations. Activities can be organized here, like mountain biking and horseback riding, and if you\u2019re on a budget, you can crash in their dorms or use the campsite.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Note: this is not an exhaustive list of the hotels and lodges around Cotopaxi.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/andes-cotopaxi083.jpg\" alt=\"Cities and villages to sleep after visiting Cotopaxi\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cities and villages to sleep after visiting Cotopaxi<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After exploring Cotopaxi National Park, there are a few logical options to choose from as you continue your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">journey through Ecuador.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Quilotoa<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The next obvious stop is Quilotoa Crater, located farther South from Cotopaxi, about three and a half hours driving. Cotopaxi and Quilotoa trips are often combined since they\u2019re located in the same general area, they\u2019re both accessible and definitely worth visiting.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once you\u2019re in Quilotoa, you might want to go on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/everything-quilotoa-loop\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Quilotoa Loop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which a multi-day hike through the area passing through small towns like Chugchil\u00e1n and Isinliv\u00ed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Ba\u00f1os <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another must-visit place in Ecuador is Ba\u00f1os de Agua Santa, also a three and a half hour drive from Cotopaxi. Ba\u00f1os is known as the adventure capital of Ecuador, where you\u2019ll find many activities, including river rafting, ziplining, cycling, hiking, not to mention access to the deeper Amazon through the town of Puyo.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Quito <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While you may not expect to head back to the city after visiting Cotopaxi, it really depends on what you want to see next. From Quito you can go on other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/day-trips-from-quito\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">day trips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to Mindo (cloudforest west of the Andes) and Otavalo (Saturday indigenous handicraft market).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18553\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/ar-it-andes10-latacunga-hostal-san-agustin-de-callo-foto0016.jpg\" alt=\"It is possible to camp at Cotopaxi?\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wanderbus Ecuador<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re planning on heading to Cotopaxi National Park, you should definitely consider hopping on the Wanderbus to Cotopaxi, which is one of the main stops for the Wanderbus, and the first one when leaving Quito.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The main advantage to taking the Wanderbus for this trip is because the bus will take you right up and into Cotopaxi National Park, whereas a regular bus that leaves from Quitumbe will drop you off on the highway and you\u2019ll need to find another way into the park itself. Annoying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also, even if you decide to sleep at Cotopaxi, you can hop on the next Wanderbus that passes through and continue onwards to Quilotoa, Ba\u00f1os, and many more destinations countrywide.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you wondering where to sleep at Cotopaxi?
