Many people wonder whether they can visit Quilotoa and Cotopaxi in one day and the answer is YES. If you\u2019re really limited on time, you can combine a trip to Quilotoa and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/how-to-arrive-to-cotopaxi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cotopaxi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in one day, making it back to Quito by nightfall. You\u2019ll come exhausted, but if you only have one day to spare, this is the trip you can\u2019t miss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, to be perfectly honest, if you have the extra time, I would combine a visit to Cotopaxi and Quilotoa over 2-3 days. This way you don\u2019t spend as much time on the road and have more time to do an activity in Cotopaxi, like horseback riding or mountain biking, or hike through the Quilotoa area. More on that in the itinerary section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The reason it is feasible to visit both Quilotoa and Cotopaxi in one day is because they\u2019re both in the same area of the northern Andes and connected by the same highway. Cotopaxi is closer to Quito and is normally the first stop (if you\u2019re coming from Quito), while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/quilotoa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quilotoa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is farther south.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/product\/jacamar-pass-quito-to-banos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19262 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/10-cotopaxi.jpg\" alt=\"Visit Cotopaxi Volcano\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How far is Quilotoa from Cotopaxi?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The distance between Quilotoa and Cotopaxi is 105 km (65.2 miles) and takes around 2 hours by car.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re traveling by regular bus, expect to take much longer because you\u2019ll need to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exit Cotopaxi Park to the main highway<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take a bus to Latacunga or Sigchos<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take another bus to Quilotoa\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>If that sounds like an unnecessary hassle (it is), hop on the Wanderbus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which takes you directly from Cotopaxi to Quilotoa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Confession: I write for Wanderbus and am obviously completely biased when it comes to promoting bus travel in Ecuador. But <\/span><b>from personal experience, this stretch between Cotopaxi and Quilotoa is weirdly inaccessible with regular transport<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, unless you hire a private car to take you the whole way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Wanderbus makes it SO MUCH easier, and that\u2019s because Wanderbus routes are designed to take travelers directly to top destinations like Cotopaxi, located within a national park that regular buses don\u2019t enter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ecuador is an incredible place to explore by bus and you\u2019ll find regular bus routes to nearly every corner of the country at cheap rates (we\u2019re talking $1-2 per hour traveled!). However, these routes aren\u2019t designed for tourists; they\u2019re made for Ecuadorians that travel between cities where they work and towns where they live, or where their families live. It also happens to be the itinerary for our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/product\/jacamar-pass-quito-to-banos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jacamar Pass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>06:00-07:00<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Depart from Quito from your selected pick-up point.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>08:00<\/b> Stop for breakfast<\/li>\n<li><b>09:30<\/b> Guidance at Cotopaxi National Park, home to one of the world\u2019s highest active volcanoes.<\/li>\n<li><b>11:30<\/b> Depart Cotopaxi to Quilotoa<\/li>\n<li><b>13:00<\/b> Traditional Andean lunch at Quilotoa<\/li>\n<li><b>13:45<\/b> Guidance at Quilotoa. Explore the 3km-wide turquoise volcanic crater lake.<\/li>\n<li><b>16:00<\/b> Depart Quilotoa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you have more time and would rather spend a night in either, or both, Cotopaxi and Quilotoa consider these options:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Cotopaxi National Park there are a number of activities to consider, like horse-back riding, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/plan-your-cotopaxi-mountain-biking-trip-in-ecuador\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">downhill mountain biking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/cotopaxi-active-volcano\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">summiting the mighty volcano.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You can either camp in the park or stay at a nearby hotel, like Tambopaxi or the Secret Garden (highly recommended!).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Quilotoa, explore the area on a multi-day trek called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/everything-quilotoa-loop\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quilotoa Loop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Don\u2019t worry about gear for this hike, you\u2019ll be passing through various small towns with restaurant and hostel options. In terms of hostels, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blacksheepinn.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black Sheep Inn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, located in the town of Chugchil\u00e1n, is a personal favorite. Within the crater itself you can camp and rent a kayak.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whichever itinerary you end up going with, make sure to LEAVE EARLY from Quito (6 am, ideally). You\u2019re more likely to see Cotopaxi in the early morning, before the clouds roll in. If you\u2019re planning to summit Cotopaxi, you\u2019ll be starting at midnight \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wanderbus Ecuador<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I think I\u2019ve already raved about the Wanderbus enough for this specific route, but let me emphasize &#8211; visiting Quilotoa and Cotopaxi in one day is a hassle unless you\u2019re going on a private tour, with a private car, OR with the Wanderbus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Apart from that, why choose the Wanderbus? It\u2019s safe, convenient and will take you to all the top destinations in Ecuador. Many of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/passes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wanderbus passes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> also include activities and short stops along the way that you might have otherwise missed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another advantage to traveling with the Wanderbus is that you skip the hectic bus terminals which are often crawling with pickpockets. On the Wanderbus, safety is a priority so you don&#8217;t have to worry. Our buses are well-maintained and you\u2019ll be traveling with the same group of people for most legs of the trip (a few might hop on \/ off along the way).
