Even with a couple of days (or more) in Quito, make sure you know how to make the most of your time there. Here is a short list of some activities you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">must <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">do in Quito.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19580 size-full\" title=\"A short list of things you must do in Quito\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/featured-1.jpg\" alt=\"A short list of things you must do in Quito\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Places you must visit<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Bas\u00edlica del Voto Nacional<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; To a new visitor, Quito might feel overwhelming, polluted, and busy. However, there are innumerable gems worth exploring in this capital city. The Bas\u00edlica del Voto Nacional, a neo-Gothic cathedral in Quito\u2019s Old Town is truly impressive and worth a visit, even if you aren\u2019t into churches.\u00a0 <\/span>The best part about the Bas\u00edlica is the view from one of its towers, overlooking the valley of Quito. On a bright, sunny day you can spot all the parks, plazas and churches from this vantage point and take some sweet panos. Access to the towers costs $2 per person and if you\u2019re going on a sunny day, make sure to take some serious sun protection (SPF 50+, hat, sunglasses).<\/li>\n<li><b>Plaza Grande<\/b> &#8211; This is the capital\u2019s main plaza, officially called<i>\u00a0Plaza de la Independencia<\/i>, and is the heart of Quito\u2019s Old Town. On the weekends, <i>la Plaza Grande<\/i> is teeming with families, entertainers, and street vendors. It\u2019s a great place to stop for a quick coffee, read a book, and people watch &#8211; there are even hole-in-the-wall mini cafes under the church with beautiful views.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19588 size-full\" title=\"Places you must visit in Quito\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/pn-andes-pichincha-quito-basilica-372-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Places you must visit in Quito\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Activities you must do<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>TeleferiQo and climbing Rucu Pichincha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; This is one of my favorite activities to do around Quito. This short day trip starts on the edge of the city and takes you to what feels like a whole other world. Be warned: a trip to the TeleferiQo and Rucu Pichincha requires a bit of hiking, which is no small feat at 3,945 m (12,943 ft). If you prefer not to hike, you can always snap shots of the city and surrounding mountains on the ride up the TeleferiQo and stroll around at the landing before you head down again. There are also a couple of small coffee shops but you can also bring your own thermos and snacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re in decent shape and enjoy climbing mountains, try to make it to Rucu Pichincha\u2019s summit at 4,784 m (15,696 ft). You\u2019ll likely be huffing and puffing the whole way, but it\u2019s well worth the struggle! Make sure to bring water, warm layers, and sun protection. Especially on a sunny day, warm layers might not seem necessary, but at the top you\u2019re much more exposed to the elements. Start as soon as the TeleferiQo opens (8am) and try to make it down before 1-2 pm. Depending on the month you\u2019re there, storms commonly form on this mountain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19582 size-full\" title=\"Places you must visit in Quito\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/teleferico-1.jpg\" alt=\"Places you must visit in Quito\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ay trips<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Cotopaxi Volcano<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> -Many people don\u2019t realize how close Quito is to some of the country\u2019s top destinations, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/cotopaxi-day-trips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cotopaxi Volcano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Cotopaxi is an active, snow-capped volcano that is impressive to see and photograph. Its conical shape makes it look like something straight out of a National Geographic magazine and on clear afternoons, the sunset colors reflecting off its glacier is mesmerizing. <\/span>Cotopaxi National Park offers many more sights and activities, including a visit to Limpiopungo Lagoon, horseback riding across the <i>p\u00e1ramo <\/i>(Andean grasslands), mountain biking and hiking up to the refuge at 4,800 m (15,744 ft). If you\u2019re a climber, consider summiting Cotopaxi itself, though you will have to plan in advance.<\/li>\n<li><b>Quilotoa Crater<\/b> &#8211; Another incredible destination close to Quito is Quilotoa Crater. It\u2019s a little farther than Cotopaxi and takes about 3 hours driving from Quito. Nonetheless, it is often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/visit-quilotoa-and-cotopaxi-in-one-day\/\">combined with a trip to Cotopaxi<\/a> (check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/passes\">Wanderbus passes<\/a>, some of them visit both destinations in one day). Quilotoa Crater is a water-filled caldera formed after the eruption of a volcano. From the lip of the crater you\u2019ll find a sheer drop, ending in a turquoise-colored lake. That, combined with an incredible view of the surrounding mountains and volcanoes makes for some incredible photos. You can hike down into the crater and\/or hike around the crater lip. Don\u2019t be fooled though, both of these hikes are taxing for anyone that isn\u2019t acclimatized.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19586 size-full\" title=\"Day trips from Quito\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/788a1726-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Day trips from Quito\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Food and drinks you should definitely try<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The list of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/traditional-foods-market\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ecuadorian food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and drinks you need to try is way too long for this blog, but here are just a few you should look for when you\u2019re out and about in town.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Canelazo &#8211;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> This warm, alcoholic beverage is a favorite among Quite\u00f1os, especially on a chilly evening or local celebration. Canelazo is basically a fruit punch, made with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">naranjilla<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> juice, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">panela<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (unrefined whole cane sugar), cinnamon, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">aguardiente<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (local hard liquor). One lovely and romantic spot to drink a good <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">canelazo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anankeguapulo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anank\u00e9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a pizzer\u00eda in a neighborhood called Gu\u00e1pulo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><i>Encocado de camar\u00f3n<\/i><\/b> &#8211; If you enjoy seafood, you <i>have to<\/i> try the mouth-watering <i>encocado de camar\u00f3n (shrimp encocado). <\/i>This is essentially an Ecuadorian coconut curry, made with fresh coconut milk, and is best experienced on the coast of Esmeraldas, where the dish originates, but you\u2019ll find great options in Quito too. The dish in normally served with white rice and <i>patacones (fried plantain). <\/i>Honestly, you could go for the <i>encocado de camar\u00f3n, pescado (fish) or langostinos (prawns)<\/i> &#8211; they\u2019re all delicious!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19584 size-full\" title=\"The Wanderbus\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/bus-1.jpg\" alt=\"The Wanderbus\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Wanderbus<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Planning on visiting numerous destinations across the country after your stop in Quito?
