If you have an extra day or two to spare in Quito, you should <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">definitely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> visit the Mindo cloud forest. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Apart from its lush, tropical climate and natural biodiversity, there are many ecotourism enterprises to choose from. In the following blog, I\u2019ll go into some reasons why you\u2019ll fall in love with the Mindo Cloud Forest Reserve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20069 size-full\" title=\"You will fall in love with Mindo Cloud Forest Reserve \" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/featured.jpg\" alt=\"mindo cloud forest\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mindo Cloud Forest Reserve is a great ecotourism destination<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A good reason to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/mindo-ecuador\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">visit Mindo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is because it\u2019s <\/span><b>one of the top ecotourism destinations in all of Ecuador. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Likely due to its proximity to Quito, both local and international tourists frequent this area, attracted to the rich diversity in flora and fauna, including species of endemic orchids, hummingbirds, and butterflies.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>In Mindo, you\u2019ll find many options in ecotourism.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> To further conserve the area\u2019s biodiversity, local business owners have embraced ecotourism, often installing green energy solutions and choosing low impact approaches to running their establishments versus more conventional solutions. These businesses directly benefit the economic development and political empowerment of local communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You\u2019ll still come across establishments that aren\u2019t particularly eco-friendly, but suffice to say a substantial portion of the Mindo population values and does their part to protect their natural surroundings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Everything you can do in the Mindo Cloud Forest Reserve<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Zipline adventure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; Before Ba\u00f1os became the \u201cadventure capital\u201d of Ecuador, Mindo received a lot of attention due to its zipline circuits. Upon entering the town, take a right at the farthest corner of the central plaza. Follow this road across a couple of rivers and up a mountain toward El Ed\u00e9n: Treehouse. Before El Ed\u00e9n, you\u2019ll come across two zipline companies: Mindo Ziplines Tour and Mindo Canopy Adventures. To get here following Google Maps, you would get on Vicente Aguirre, turn right on Ruta R\u00edo Mindo, and a final right on V\u00eda a las Cascadas. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Inner tubing<\/b> &#8211; The Mindo River, which runs down from the Andes and along the town, is one of Mindo\u2019s main attractions (as bodies of water often are!). A popular activity, especially for families, is to rent inner tubes and bump your way down the rapids. This is generally a fun, and harmless, activity, but children should be closely supervised. During the rainy season, the river swells and rapids become more dangerous for inner tubers.<\/li>\n<li><b>Butterfly farm &#8211;<\/b> Mindo\u2019s climate is ideal for many tropical critters, especially butterflies. Mariposas de Mindo is the town\u2019s main butterfly center where you can interact directly with these delicate insects. If you want them to land on you, remember not to apply any insect repellent that day!<\/li>\n<li><b>Hiking &#8211; <\/b>There\u2019s nothing like hiking through tropical forests. Check out the Ruta de Cascadas trail or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Hacienda+San+Vincente+%2F+Yellow+House+Trail+%26+Lodge+(Casa+Amarilla)\/@-0.065185,-78.7893973,14.83z\/data=!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x91d57c4699565207:0x7341c14f9b735b21!2sMindo+Valley!3b1!8m2!3d-0.048717!4d-78.775198!3m4!1s0x0:0x2c5f2fdee91b4dec!8m2!3d-0.0512516!4d-78.7723053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yellow House Trail<\/a> to experience the forest. For the Ruta de Cascadas, you\u2019ll have to head up to the <i>tarabita<\/i> (cable car) for $5 (roundtrip) and then follow the trail to see a series of beautiful waterfalls. The Yellow House offers visitors and number of trails which are great for avid birdwatchers There are many more hiking trails to explore in Mindo, so don\u2019t limit yourself to these two! Ask at the tourist office or small tourist agencies for directions to other trails scattered throughout the surrounding cloudforest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20071 size-full\" title=\"Everything you can do in Mindo Cloud Forest Reserve\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/dsc00670.jpg\" alt=\"Everything you can do in Mindo Cloud Forest Reserve\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1800\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other perfect destinations for ecotourism in Ecuador<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you love ecotourism you cannot miss out these destinations: Gal\u00e1pagos Islands, Cotopaxi, and the Amazon Rainforest.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Gal\u00e1pagos Islands<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We can\u2019t speak of ecotourism in Ecuador and not mention the Gal\u00e1pagos Islands. The ecological and environmental significance of the Gal\u00e1pagos Islands attracts thousands of tourists annually: in 2018, it received 275,817 visitors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Residents of the Islands and Gal\u00e1pagos National Park authorities are keenly aware of the importance of protecting their natural assets and much of the profits from ecotourism are used to continue conserving the Islands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Upon arriving at the Islands, tourists are also expected to abide by certain guidelines to reduce their environmental impact. For instance, within protected areas, all visitors must be accompanied by a certified naturalist guide. Fishing is only authorized on certain boats and in certain areas and <\/span><b>no one is allowed to feed the animals.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Cotopaxi<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After the Galapagos Islands, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/cotopaxi-day-trips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cotopaxi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is one of Ecuador\u2019s top ecotourism destinations. This protected area, covering 334 km\u00b2 (208 miles\u00b2), is home to wild horses, the Andean Condor, the Andean speckled bear and the Andean puma. A few environmentally conscious businesses in the area include: The Secret Garden, Tierra del Volc\u00e1n, and Chilcabamba Lodge.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Amazon <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Gal\u00e1pagos Islands are clearly defined and protection of these and the surrounding waters is considerably easier than protection of tracts of dense, Amazonian Rainforest. The Amazon is disappearing at an agonizing rate and while you can still visit it today, it might not be around for future generations.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>As a tourist, by participating in ecotourism, you can encourage protection of the region, instead of destruction, and this is particularly important in the Amazon.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/product\/wander-pass-loop-around-ecuador\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20076 size-full\" title=\"Ecuador by bus\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/7-ecuador-by-bus.jpg\" alt=\"Ecuador by bus\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Within the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wanderbusecuador.com\/ecuador-amazon-jungle-tour\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ecuadorian Amazon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are numerous protected areas, including the Yasun\u00ed Biosphere Reserve, considered one of the world\u2019s most biodiverse areas. Other protected areas within the Amazon include the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, Cayambe-Coca National Park, Sumaco-Napo-Galeras National Park, and the Llanganates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A few good community ecotourism projects you can support include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Sinchi Warmi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, owned and run by an association of Kichwa women. You can stay in hand-built, attractive wooden cabins that are set around a small lake. Their restaurant offers local specialties as well as international dishes and vegetarian options. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Near Lago Agrio, the<\/span><b> Siekoya Remolino community <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">protects 17,000 hectares of rainforest and is run by four families who have created a tourism project, Campamento Kwakwiyo. Accommodation is with families or in a covered camping area and you can bird watch, go on a night walk, a canoe trip, a jungle hike, and harvest yucca.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Near the city of Puyo, <\/span><b>Fundaci\u00f3n Hola Vida<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has trails you can explore through 225 hectares of secondary rainforest, including a beautiful waterfall. The area is located 27 kilometers south of Puyo just off the Via Macas.
