The beautiful and unique flora and fauna of the Amazon rainforest; the stunning snow-capped peaks of the Andes; the coast\u2019s dreamy white-sand beaches and turquoise waters; beautiful cities with Spanish architecture; colorful indigenous villages; Inca ruins … the list goes on and on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, let me help you figure out your travel plans with my personal list of the best tourist places in Ecuador.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gal\u00e1pagos Islands<\/span><\/h3>\n

No doubt these islands are the highlight of Ecuador, most famous for inspiring Charles Darwin to develop his theory of evolution and his seminal book, \u201cOn the Origin of Species\u201d. The Gal\u00e1pagos archipelago is home to some of the most beautiful and rare animal species on the planet, such as sea iguanas, blue footed boobies, giant tortoises, hammerhead sharks, and many more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cities and towns<\/span><\/h3>\n

Quito<\/b>, the capital of the country, is the most visited Ecuadorian city. You will love the contrast between the vibrant metropolis of the New Town and the beautiful colonial architecture of the Old Town. Show your bravery by climbing the tower of La Bas\u00edlica, or enjoy strolling in one of the well-kept city parks.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Best<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n

Guayaquil<\/b><\/a> is\u00a0 the largest city on the Ecuadorian coast and the economic center of the country. You\u2019ll go crazy for the huge iguanas that have taken over Seminario Park! Undoubtedly Guayaquil is the country\u2019s most cosmopolitan city.<\/span>
\n<\/b><\/p>\n

Cuenca<\/b><\/a>, on the other hand, is arguably the country\u2019s most beautiful city. Besides the Spanish architecture, colorful open-air markets, and four rushing white-water rivers, Cuenca offers you the chance to visit El Cajas National Park.<\/span>
\n<\/b><\/p>\n

Ba\u00f1os de Agua Santa<\/b> is a gem of a spa town guarded by an active volcano. It\u2019s also a paradise for adventurers and adrenaline seekers. Slacklining, rafting, kayaking, trekking, biking, bridge jumping \u2026 any extreme sport you can name, Ba\u00f1os almost certainly has it.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/b><\/p>\n

Vilcabamba<\/b>, the valley of longevity. You definitely don\u2019t want to miss the chance to discover the secret behind the amazing age of some of its residents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Monta\u00f1ita<\/b><\/a>, the surf mecca, home to\u00a0 the best waves on the Ecuadorian coast. Monta\u00f1ita used to be a fishing village until it was discovered by some pioneering surfers in the 70\u2019s and developed into the heart of Ecuador\u2019s surf scene and nightlife.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Amazon rainforest<\/span><\/h3>\n

This place is pure magic for nature lovers. Whether you visit a city in the Amazon region or dare to go further afield into an indigenous community, the experience will be amazing. These forests are home to anacondas, jaguars, monkeys <\/span>– a lot of monkeys! –<\/span><\/i> caiman, tropical birds, and millions of insects! To get the most from your jungle visit, switch on your \u201cadventure mode\u201d and be open to immerse yourself in a different culture.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most popular tourist attractions in Ecuador<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Middle of the World<\/span><\/h3>\n

Yep, that famous line crosses the country! No wonder it\u2019s called Ecuador, right? There is a tourist complex an hour and a half north of Quito where you can stand with a foot in each hemisphere!<\/span>
\nVolcanoes.<\/span><\/p>\n

You have plenty of peaks to choose from: Chimborazo (6310 mt \/ 20702.1 ft), <\/span>Cotopaxi<\/span><\/a> (5987 mt\/19642.4 ft), Illinizas (5248 mt\/17217.8 ft), Rucu Pichincha (4627 mt\/15180.5 ft), Cayambe (5790 mt\/18996.1 ft), and many more. These\u00a0Andean mountains are every climber\u2019s dream!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Tourist<\/span><\/p>\n

Quilotoa<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n

A lake inside the crater of a volcano. The landscape, as well as the altitude, will take your breath away. Quilotoa is located 3 hours south of Quito.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Devil\u2019s Nose<\/span><\/h3>\n

This stretch of railway, which descends over 500 m in just 12km via a series of switchbacks, was an impressive feat of engineering when it was completed in the early 1900s. The train departs twice a day from the charming colonial town of Alaus\u00ed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Devil\u2019s Cauldron<\/span><\/h3>\n

This magnificent waterfall is located 20 minutes from Ba\u00f1os de Agua Santa. Once there you can admire the torrent of water close-up from a series of paths and walkways, but be prepared to get wet! The most fun way to get there is by bike from Ba\u00f1os.<\/span><\/p>\n

National Parks<\/span><\/h3>\n

El Cajas National Park, located 30 minutes from Cuenca, is full of crystalline lakes and streams. It\u2019s cold this high up, so don\u2019t forget your jacket! Machalilla National Park, four hours north of Guayaquil, includes Isla de La Plata (also known as the Poor Man\u2019s Galapagos), the Agua Blanca archeological reserve, and the stunning Los Frailes beach <\/span>– personally one of my favourite beaches because of its white sand<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

L<\/b>esser known destinations<\/b><\/h2>\n

Loja<\/span><\/h3>\n

This city is known as the cultural capital of Ecuador because of its many music festivals. In fact, some of the best Ecuadorian musicians were born and raised here. Loja is located three hours south of Cuenca.<\/span><\/p>\n

Montecristi<\/span><\/h3>\n

There are some interesting facts about this city. One of the most important presidents of Ecuador, Eloy Alfaro Delgado, was born here. People still visit his house, which is located right in front of the first girls\u2019 school to be founded in Ecuador (did I mention that Eloy Alfaro was the first president to allow women to vote and study?). Montecristi is also the real homeland of Panama hats and it\u2019s not uncommon to see craftspeople weaving them on their porches.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Lesser<\/span><\/h3>\n

Puyango Petrified forest<\/span><\/h3>\n

This magical forest is located near the Peruvian border, four hours south of Guayaquil. Its location is remote, but it\u2019s worth making the journey to see the fossilized trees and sea creatures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Zaruma<\/span><\/h3>\n

This picturesque town has cobbled streets, traditional wooden architecture and excellent coffee. It\u2019s also known for its gold mines, for which the province of El Oro is named.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
