Ecuador is one of the smallest countries in South America, and yet it still has great natural and cultural diversity. What this means for you is that you can visit all four corners of the country without shelling out on expensive flights (or spending 30 hours on a bus)! <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>1. What\u2019s a good starting point for bus travel in Ecuador?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quito is a great starting point as there are buses to every area of the country from here. There are direct buses to most major areas, but if there isn\u2019t a direct bus you can easily change at the nearest city. We recommend getting night buses for the longer stretches, as they are less likely to stop en route and there is less traffic so they are much faster. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Here are some average times on direct buses from Quito:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quito to Canoa = 6 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quito to Guayaquil = 8 hours <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quito to Cuenca = 9 hours <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quito to Monta\u00f1ita = 10 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quito to Ba\u00f1os = 3.5 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quito to Tena = 6 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quito to Coca = 7 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quito to Otavalo = 2 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quito to Galapagos = impossible<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a rule of thumb, journey costs are about $1-$1.50 per hour. Is it better to fly to get around Ecuador?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can fly to all major cities and large towns, but because the country isn\u2019t huge the time you save by flying isn\u2019t necessarily worth the money. <\/span><br \/>\nMainland Ecuador cities and towns connected by scheduled flights (some more regular than others):<\/p>\n<p><strong>AIRPORTS IN THE ANDES with scheduled passenger flights<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quito<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cuenca<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Loja<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cotopaxi (not used much for passengers)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>AIRPORTS IN THE AMAZON<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lago Agrio <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Coca<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shell Mera (light planes only)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>AIRPORTS ON THE COAST<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Guayaquil<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Esmeraldas<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Manta<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Salinas<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Santa Rosa <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>AIRPORTS IN GALAPAGOS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Baltra<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">San Crist\u00f3bal<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Isabela (only light planes) <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Note that not all of these cities\/towns are inter-connected. For example, you can only fly to the Amazon towns from Quito.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Internal flights can vary in cost. One-way flights can be found for around $80, but at peak times they can cost up to $300 return. So not a good backpacking alternative! Guayaquil and Cuenca\u2019s airports are very central.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The airlines operating domestic flights in Ecuador are: TAME, LATAM and Avianca.<\/p>\n<h3><b>How to get from Quito airport to the city <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quito\u2019s airport is located in Tababela, about 30 km to the east of the city. To get to the city itself, you need to take a public bus to the Rio Coca, Carcel\u00e9n or Quitumbe bus terminals ($2), take a shuttle bus to the Bicentenario Park ($8), hail an Uber (about $15-17), or grab a cab from the official taxi rank (about $25).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Credit: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dnevill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dan Nevill<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Ecuador by Bus<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Buses in Ecuador have time tables but not all companies stick to them. Those going from major terminals like Quitumbe in the south of Quito tend to be on time, as there are more controls and logistics involved. Once you get to other terminals outside of Quito some buses wait until they are full enough, or go early if they are already full. We have found that there is virtually no reliable information on time tables or routes unless you physically go to the terminal (or miraculously find the bus company\u2019s phone number), which is an absolute bummer in the case of Quitumbe because it takes about an hour to get there from the Centro Hist\u00f3rico or La Mariscal\/La Floresta. If you have mild OCD and want to book things in advance, it\u2019s pretty impossible to do so. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>4. Bus safety in Ecuador<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pickpockets usually operate above deck. If you\u2019re travelling with luggage in the hold, just make sure it\u2019s well closed and you shouldn\u2019t have any problems. We tend to put our valuables in a backpack that we carry with us at all times just in case. On the bus, don\u2019t put your bags in the rack above your head, or on the floor, but instead keep it on your lap. Thieves have been known to sneak under the seats and empty out the goods while you sleep. Having said this, crime is not rampant in Ecuador \u2013 just be cautious. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Bus accidents in Ecuador<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In terms of accidents, Ecuador unfortunately does not have the best reputation. There are regular tragic accidents involving public buses. In 2018, there have been 104 deaths in 751 traffic accidents involving public buses. In 2017, there were 84 deaths from 1,254 bus accidents. It\u2019s estimated that there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eluniverso.com\/noticias\/2018\/08\/16\/nota\/6907268\/fallecidos-accidentes-buses-ya-superaron-cifra-8-meses-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6.2 deaths from bus accidents per 100,000 inhabitants in Ecuador.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The main cause of the accidents is driver error and the poor maintenance, and age, of the vehicles involved. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Taking night buses in Ecuador<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can take buses at night to make the most of the day time for exploring destinations. However, it\u2019s worth noting that the majority of accidents on public buses happen at night. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you decide to take night buses to cram as much as possible in, take a pillow and a blanket. The pillow will allow you to use your neck in subsequent days, and the blanket can be incredibly helpful for those journeys where the driver decides he would rather be in the North Pole and puts the air conditioning on full blast. We also wear a money belt so we can snore away without being stressed about our valuables.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>5. Is there an alternative to public buses in Ecuador?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are looking for an alternative to public buses, you should check out <strong>Wanderbus<\/strong>.
